Are You REALLY Ready to Work from Home?
42Many people feel that they’re ready to start a home business or at least work from their home as an independent contractor. Actually, a lot of people are jumping on that bandwagon today with the way the world is turning. Things such as high gas prices, car prices, daycare rates, and more, are all causing people to re-think things such as long commutes. The other thing is the length of time that working outside the home takes people away from their families. This is definitely a huge consideration when taking this huge step.
Before you hand in that two week notice, there are a few things that you need to think about. First of all, do you have space in your home to devote to an office? This can be either an extra bedroom, walk-in closet, or a corner of a room. The point is you MUST have a quiet place to work if you’re going to get anything done.
The next thing you need to consider is whether or not your business idea or the company you’re working at home for are good ones. Will it make enough money for you to live on and provide for your family? People rarely get rich by working from home. That doesn’t mean that you can’t make a good living, or even a comfortable one. But you need to understand that it’s not something that will happen quickly.
There are other considerations such as health insurance. It’s easier to have a good health plan if you’re working in an office for a company. Getting your own health insurance can be tricky especially if you have a pre-existing condition. So you need to definitely think about this part.
If there’s start money needed for a small business idea, are you sure you have it? Or will you need to try to get a small business loan? Even such things as office supplies need to be purchased. You’ll need a computer, filing cabinet, desk, chair, printer, copier, telephone, and other office supplies. It will take money to afford them.
Suppose you have very small children that will require a big part of your day in caring for them. In that case, you’ll still need some sort of daycare plan in place or you won’t be able to get your work done. For two parent homes, this can be arranged so that you can get work done during naptimes, and after your partner gets home in the evening. You can switch off in then so that you can have the quiet time you need to do your work. Otherwise, it may be that you’ll need to hire someone to babysit for you at home during part of the day. Of course, daycare is something that has to be considered whether you work from home or not.
After you have gone through the list of necessary things to consider when working from home, ask yourself very seriously if you’re really ready to work from home. It’s still a wonderful way to make a living once you figure it all out.
