A lot of people tend to believe that home based businesses and work at home jobs fall into the same category. In fact, there are some primary differences between the two even though both involve doing some work from your home office. However, they seem to be grouped together in a lot of ways, so at times, it’s difficult to see what the differences are.

First of all, home based businesses are businesses that you operate from your home. It may, however, require that you go out from time to time to other locations to perform work, take orders, deliver products and so on. In this case, you will be keeping any inventory at your home as well as conducting such things as phone business, computer business, and book keeping. Put simply, your home is your base of operations even though you most likely won’t be working from there all the time.

A work at home job allows you to perform all of your job duties right from the comfort of your home office. This may or may not require you to run work related errands from time to time, but for the most part, you’ll work from home without going out a great deal. Everything you need should be found in your home office, therefore, there’s no real need for you to go anywhere else to work.

That is the biggest and most noticeable difference between these two ways of making money from home. Other differences have to do with money. A home based business may require some initial startup money that may need to be borrowed through a loan. A work at home job will not require you to put out any money to work except, possibly, for such supplies like a computer, printer, filing cabinet, desk and chair. Chances are, though, you already will have most or all of those things.

Your work at home job will provide you with instructions as to what you need to do to make money as you’re most likely working as an independent contractor. You won’t have to figure out what comes next because you’ll have a set of duties that need to be performed. So you’ll always know what you’re doing. A home based business will probably present challenges on a daily basis. You may also need to figure out certain things regarding your business, including performing your own customer service support duties. As it’s your business, you’ll need to resolve any issues and problems your customers may have in order to keep them happy.

What it comes down to is what your preferences are and what sort of personality you have as to whether you want to operate your own home based business or simply work as an independent contractor and let someone else have the headaches of business dealings. There’s nothing wrong with either choice as they both offer much more independence than working in an outside job every day. The choice is yours.
