Organization 101

Something that all home business owners or those people who work from home need to know is how to be organized. The theory is that if you begin with an orderly office, it will be much easier to keep things orderly and neat rather than letting it slip into chaos. However, even this isn’t true for everyone.
If you’re one of those people who can’t organize anything to save your life, don’t be ashamed to ask for help. While you may be one of the most disorganized people on the planet, you most likely also know at least ONE person who is organization personified. This is the person who has every drawer and closet in their home neat and in perfect order. They may have things labeled in the closets and cabinets. At any rate, this is the person you want to come in and help you set up your home office.
The first thing you’re going to learn how to do is make an effective list. If you’ve never been a list maker, you’re about to learn. In fact, knowing how to make a good list is one of the first steps in becoming more organized. Lists will keep you on the right track, and when you’re finished with something on a list, it can be crossed off. That little action gives you a feeling of accomplishment. It also helps make sure that you get everything that you need.
Your first list is going to include everything that you need for your home office. On this list, you will write everything from ink pens, pencils and legal pads to wastebasket and filing folders. You need to have everything written down in order to keep you organized. In fact, have your organized friend help you make this list just so you don’t miss anything.
One thing you’ll definitely want to buy is a sizeable filing cabinet. To go with this, get some folders with labels. This helps you keep your filing together in a way that you can find it quickly. It doesn’t mean that you can simply throw things in folders and go about your merry way. Label folders so that they make sense to YOU, whether you choose to alphabetize, numbers, or dates. Just do whatever works best for you. If it makes sense to you, it’ll be simpler to keep things organized.
Be sure to order the folders on your computer, also. Invest in some software that might make things easier for you. If you don’t know how to do book keeping, take a class to learn or hire someone to do it for you because it’s vital to keep track of all money coming in and going out. Just don’t let your office get so messy that you can’t get re-organized again no matter what you do.
You may feel that you’re hopeless when it comes to staying organized, but if you pay close attention to what order everything is in, you’ll be able to keep it that way. Don’t let your mind get bogged down and you’ll be fine.
